Steve Chatoff came into our lives at a moment when we needed help very badly.
One of our members was having a severe crisis. Within a few months our band found itself at the edge of a cliff. Or so it felt. We knew we had to find help. We had been impressed with Steve through the few conversations we had with him during Joey's treatment. Pretty soon we all gathered out in California. Everyone was on edge. It seemed the very existence of the band could vanish in the course of of a wrong word. But we soon learned that with Steve we had a chance to put our band back together as our entity. He really helped us realize that things could be done the way we wanted them done. A feeling of empowerment flowed under Steve's grounding influence. He showed us how to figure out what we wanted and how that related to what our higher power wanted from us. "The band isn't God" he would say. Ironically, when that phrase reverberates through our hearts, the band gets stronger.
He had a knack for helping people in a "Don't worry about it" way. He knew when a crisis was a big one but he knew that most of them were small. It's sad to lose Steve and its sad to think of those in the future who won't have the benefit of knowing him.
